About us

About Octopus50

An independent guide to the Octopus Energy referral offer, written by named people who use the supplier themselves and say plainly how the site is funded.

Why this site exists

Referral offers are simple in principle and confusing in practice. Readers arrive asking three things: how much is it worth, do I qualify, and why has the credit not appeared. Most pages answering those questions are written to convert, not to inform, and they routinely state payment timings and guarantees the supplier never published.

Octopus50 exists to answer those questions accurately, cite the official source, and be explicit that we are paid when someone switches through our link. If a claim on this site cannot be traced back to something Octopus Energy has actually published, it shouldn't be here — and if you find one that isn't, we want to know.

Written from first-hand experience

This isn't written by people who have only read Octopus Energy's help pages. Everyone on the team holds an Octopus account themselves and has been through some part of the referral process in practice — sending or receiving a link, waiting for a credit to appear, or fielding the same question from a friend or a support queue.

Daniel Whitfield, our founder and editor, spent nine years in UK energy retail billing and market analysis before starting this site, and owns the offer facts published here. Priya Raman, our research editor, previously managed a customer-service team that handled referral and billing escalations, and focuses on the awkward eligibility cases. Helen Marsh, our editorial reviewer, has two decades in consumer and personal-finance publishing and signs off every factual and commercial claim before it goes live. Read the full profiles.

What we cover

  • The current referral offer facts, last checked 29 August 2026
  • Eligibility, exclusions and the real payment trigger, not a guessed deadline
  • Step-by-step guidance on using, sharing or adding a referral code
  • How Octopus Energy tariffs and switching work more broadly, for context
  • Named authors and reviewers on every page, and a public change log

How we verify offers

Every figure and rule on this site — the reward amount, who qualifies, and what triggers payment — is checked directly against Octopus Energy's own published referral guidance and terms, not against other blogs or forum posts. We re-check those facts on a regular schedule and immediately whenever a reader reports something that looks out of date. When we're not certain Octopus has confirmed a detail, we say so rather than filling the gap with a plausible guess.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell energy, process switches or take your bank or meter details
  • We do not publish testimonials, ratings or counters we cannot evidence
  • We do not claim a payment deadline Octopus has not published
  • We do not claim any tariff is cheapest — that depends on your address and usage

Independence

Octopus50 is an independent guide. It is not operated, endorsed or reviewed by Octopus Energy.

How we are funded

Referral rewards, and nothing else. If you switch through our link and qualify, you receive £50 energy account credit and the referrer receives £50. There is no charge to you and no difference to your tariff or price. The full explanation, including what we would do differently if that changed, is on how we make money.

Editorial standards

Every page has a named author and, where the claim is commercial, a named reviewer. Sources are linked inline so you can check them yourself, and material corrections are dated and logged rather than quietly edited away. The full detail of how we research, write, review and correct pages is set out in our editorial policy.

Where to start
